Color matching and tolerance

The tool compares each pixel with the selected source color and applies the replacement color when it falls within the tolerance.

The preview is a quick visual check. Use the downloaded file as the final output, especially around anti-aliased edges.

Method and calculation

For each pixel, the RGB distance from the source color is compared with the tolerance; matching pixels are written with the target color.

Boundaries and limitations

A high tolerance can recolor nearby shades, while anti-aliased edges may still contain blended colors. Color-count reduction can also alter nearby tones.

Privacy and local processing

Reading, decoding, pixel processing, and result generation happen in this browser. Files are not uploaded and input is not saved.

Format and standards

GIF parsing and output structure follow the GIF89a format. Color matching uses decoded RGB and alpha values from each frame.

GIF color replacement questions

How do I replace one color in a GIF?

Choose the source and replacement colors, set the tolerance, then select Recolor GIF. Matching pixels are changed in every decoded frame.

What does color tolerance change?

It sets the allowed RGB distance from the source color, from 0 to 442. A higher value also matches nearby shades.

Will anti-aliased or transparent pixels be changed?

Anti-aliased edges can contain blended colors, so they may not change evenly. Turn on the opaque-pixel option to skip pixels that are not fully opaque.
